Jiu-Jitsu is an ancient martial art which originated in Japan and was practiced by samurais.

It is generally practiced with a jiu-jitsu gi on (which is the training uniform, similar to a judo gi except that the cloth tends to be heavier).

While Brazilian Jiu Jitsu encompasses many techniques, both from standing position and on the ground, its primary focus is on groundfighting…the theory being that about 90% of fights end up on the ground.

Once taking an opponent to the ground, the jiu-jitsu practitioner proceeds to work with a variety of chokes, strangle holds, joint manipulation, armlocks and lecklocks.

These holds are capable of rendering opponents unconscious, and can break bones and limbs through the use of leverage.

Also, one of the huge differences that separates Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from striking arts such as Karate is that students can spar everyday without too much fear of hurting one another.

While students are to remain careful and take care of their sparring partners, it is easy to ‘tap out’ and signal submission and still get the benefit of realistic training…unlike say Karate, where if students realistically sparred daily, they could probably quickly sustain lasting bodily damage.

This is one of the joys of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, to spar or ‘roll’ daily with other students and gauge your improvement.

It is also damn good exercise!
