Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Belts

There is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belts ranking system. In BJJ there is a series of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belts that represent how good/important someone is at Jiu Jitsu.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Belts system is extremely refined and well executed.

There are two sets of belts systems that run for adults and kids. But there is some variation in the system between gyms. For instance when I was 13 I became a red belt (which is after orange) even though most other gyms don’t recognise the red belt as a kids grade, it is just reserved for the best of the best (because it is the belt after black).

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Belts Ranking System for Adults:

In words the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belts ranking for adults is:

  • White Belt
  • First Stripe on White Belt
  • Second on White Belt
  • Third on White Belt
  • Fourth on White Belt
  • Blue Belt
  • First Stripe on Blue Belt
  • Second Stripe on Blue Belt
  • Third Stripe on Blue Belt
  • Fourth Stripe on Blue Belt
  • Purple Belt
  • First Stripe on Purple Belt
  • Second Stripe on Purple Belt
  • Third Stripe on Purple Belt
  • Fourth Stripe on Purple Belt
  • Brown Belt
  • First Stripe on Brown Belt
  • Second Stripe on Brown Belt
  • Third Stripe on Brown Belt
  • Fourth Stripe on Brown Belt
  • Black Belt
  • First Stripe on Black Belt
  • Second Stripe on Black Belt
  • Third Stripe on Black Belt
  • Fourth Stripe on Black Belt
  • Fifth Stripe on Black Belt
  • Sixth Stripe on Black Belt
  • Seventh Stripe on Black Belt
  • Eighth Stripe on Black Belt
  • Ninth Stripe on Black Belt
  • Tenth Stripe on Black Belt
  • Black and Red Belt
  • White and Red Belt
  • Red Belt (Reserved for the pioneers of Jiu Jitsu, The Gracie Brothers)

This is all subject to change and decisions based upon the instructor and specific academy.

Each of these 34 different belt levels are meant to be individual grading’s. But the instructor has some say in this and can choose to grade people quicker or slower, based on their skill level.

On average up to purple belt, each one of the these individual levels takes 3-4 months to train and then grade for.

After purple belt it starts becoming years between each one.

Juniors Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Belts Ranking System:

These belts are more up to the instructor, but have some general rules to them.

Here are the belts in grading order.

  • White Belt
  • Grey Belt
  • Yellow Belt
  • Orange Belt
  • Green Belt
  • First Stripe on Green Belt
  • Second Stripe on Green Belt
  • Third Stripe on Green Belt
  • Fourth Stripe on Green Belt
  • Blue Belt (Must Have Turned 16)

This may not look like the picture, however it is very close. The idea is; a kid can actually go straight from one belt to the next (up to green) if he/she is at a high enough level when they grade. However if the instructor believes that student is not up to it, they can give them a number of stripes based on how well they did in the grading.

This is almost entirely up to the instructor.

That is the quick overview of the Brazilian Jiu  Jitsu belts system.
